Introduction

Within the Department of Defense, the military’s role is the defense of the U.S. against foreign threats; the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Air Force fall under this responsibility. At the state level, there are National Guard and Air National Guard units. The Guard operates on a dual basis, serving the country in the defense against foreign threats, and responding to state emergency service during a domestic emergency. Guard units can be called upon for multiple reasons, to include domestic threats and to aid in the event of a natural disaster. Whereas the U.S. military is limited under legislative act. In this activity you will explore the role the military has within homeland defense at the federal and state level, and you will explain what the Posse Comitatus Act is, and how it affects the military within homeland security.
