Assignment 1
After reviewing the material to understand internal and external controls of deviance, discuss some methods of promoting social control.
- Which are internal? External? Which might be more successful? Why?
- Distinguish also between informal external controls and formal external controls.
- Give some examples of conditions that would reduce the effectiveness of informal social controls;
- Give some examples of conditions that would enhance the effectiveness of informal social controls. Use your text and/or supplemental material to support your arguments. Do not rely on opinion.
Assignment 2
Your textbook discusses the relative nature of deviance. Select one deviant act and explain how perceptions of this act can be perceived differently, based on time, place, situation and/or social status (include at least 3).
