CASE STUDY 1

A 28-year-old man lives in suburban Melbourne.  He lives in an apartment with 2 other men in their mid-20’s. Ordinarily fit and well the man enjoys living in the suburb that is close to transport, shopping malls and movie cinemas. In January 2020, the man starts to react adversely to the haze and smoke caused by the bushfires 200 km away. The haze continues for several days and the respiratory ill effects make the man feel unwell and there is also an effect on his mental health as he cannot go about his regular activities as he usually would. 

1. What specific health care would the individual require?

2. What obstacles would stand in the way of effective health care?

3. How could the obstacles be resolved?

CASE STUDY 2

A 42 year old man works on a large oil rig 300 km from the shore off  Western Australia. The man enjoys working only 14 days a month and as well as the good salary he receives. The man does have a few issues as he misses his family when he is away. The other concern he has is that at times the weather in the region can be quite unpredictable and there may be emergency evacuations. The man has to make sure that when he is on the oil rig he does not need any allied health care treatment such as a physiotherapist, podiatrist or dentist.

CASE STUDY 3

A 68-year-old woman uses a wheelchair when she leaves home. She has severe arthritis but can walk around at home with a stick or a walker. When she leaves home the woman feels more at ease using a wheelchair, the woman is able to have several appointments at the local community centre for free as she has a senior citizen’s card. She books an appointment with a nutritionist and a social worker. A day before the appointments the receptionist at the community centre rings the woman and organise meetings with the nutritionist and a social worker via an online platform. At first the woman is concerned about this online method of communication but after a few trials feels at ease with  the experience.

CASE  STUDY 4

A 36-year-old woman lives on a large rural cattle farm 40 minutes’ drive from the nearest town. She has a history of several brain tumours and experiences severe headaches and nausea at times.  She discovers that she is pregnant with twins at her 19-week ultrasound. The woman is given a complex care plan to look after her and her babies for the duration of her pregnancy. As the pregnancy advances decisions may have to be made as to whether she goes to stay in the city with her mother.
